Filament type LED lamps: Know the difference...


One of the Major plays on LED lamps now found in most nations are LED filament type lamps. For the benefit of this post we tested all available on the current China manufacturing market and some quite worrying trends.

The whole principle of this lamp started out with Diode placement on Sapphire substrate stems. You would think heat would be a major factor but with the combination of low driven diodes and Gas filled lamps heat transfer became less of an issue.


So you would figure it was high end optoelectronics required to populate these substrates and you would be correct in your thinking. ?The string of diodes need to be carefully placed on the stem and bonded with in our case "Gold wire".


Any use of "aluminium Wire" on diodes?would create a greater potential for early failures.

So not only does a production plant require the high end Optoelectronic capability to populate diodes onto stems, it also needs the Gold Wire bonding equipment.


The Stems come in different materials themselves, ones that you can "Check" just by a quick inspection, not that many do.


1) Sapphire Substrate: This is the first development and very good for Heat dissipation and bearing of the diodes upon.


2) Aluminium Substrate: This was the cheaper way to make these product to force the market down, however the lifespan of the lamp is decreased by 40% over option1.


3) New Ceramic Substrate: Ceramic has excellent heat properties and is easy to populate the lifespan will be the same as Sapphire yet the product much less expensive.





Result: You may need specialist optoelectronics to check the diodes and wire bonding but if using Aluminium stem stay away....!


So once a "Stem" has been populated it then requires coating in Phospor and testing, good quality producers will test every single stem. They will test for Colour consistency, current and resistance.


The Stem is then tap welded onto the Legs (as seen iside above) and it is placed inside the glass Cap on a machine that will inject Gas into the lamp as it is being sealed to the base.
The Lamp then should be placed on 24hr Switch cycle test equipment to ensure any faulties are removed from production.


These lamps run at around 110-120Lm/Watt and for decorative fixtures represent one of the best ranges as they reduce power of traditional lamps by 1/10th whilst increasing lifespan from 2000-4000hrs-25,000hrs.


Available in every conceivable base, type and wattage you can distinguish the wattage usually by each stem as one will equal around 0.7W.





But word of Caution as many cheap overdriven versions are being produced also, Not in our case we?invested in production of these in our own factory. With ERP, TUV, CE, ROHS see below examples from our brochure...
